I saw mental illness on a microlevel - the bills, the institutions, the struggles, the living a life that isn't normal. And on a macro level, no one is talking about this. Aging populations already have cognitive decline. Add in pre-existing mental heal issues, and then what?

And there's a huge stigma attached with mental illness, and I'll tell you why. No one is really supposed to talk authentically about it, because someone will get hurt. Here's what I mean...

I was never the same after visiting my mom at the mental institution. I felt...alone. As if I could never rely on another adult. That's not something a parent would want to hear. And yet it's my experience and my reality. Any truth on these issues will be hurtful.

Every mental health issue is a catch-22. Does a parent want to know their child may look at them differently if the parent is in an institution? How much must that hurt. I can't comprehend it. And yet I did feel different. I felt alone and on my own after that visit.

And there’s a huge fear of people to reach out when they are having a mental health episode. Everyone really cares about mental health when a celebrity commits suicide, but day to day? You’re supposed to keep this stuff to yourself.

If you let people know about a mental illness, they will use it against you. People have tried used my mom’s bipolar against me. The only people sicker than those with real conditions are everyone else.

Whenever I write about my mom’s bipolar and childhood experiences with it... So many people have similar stories. Mental health is a major issue that we’re not supposed to talk about. Until someone commits suicide or OD’s. As a society we need to grow up a bit. Or a lot.

Mental health issues don’t get written or spoken about because those most qualified to speak about them and who lived them are also least prepared for the hate. The attacks will come. And so people hide under the covers with the curtains drawn hoping the gloom goes away.

It’s hard to not say my childhood influenced my politics. What do you do about the mentally ill? What I hear from so many, “They should have saved up for the medical bills!” The glibness with which serious issues are treated has always troubled me.

Socialism isn’t going to solve the problem, nor snide remarks about “They should have saved up more!” However, the drugs my mom needed cost 1/10th of the price charged in America. $1,200 in the U.S. Every month. $120 if you ordered them from Canada. Which is illegal.

Most people in this country don't care whether a med costs $400 or $1200. They only care whether their co-pay is $5, $25, or $50. Therefore, the pharma company can charge whatever the insurance company (or Medicare, Tricare, or Medicaid) will bear. 1/3

First, I admire you for speaking publically about these issues. I do feel like we can do better than Canada. We should be able to get safe affordable medications here in the US. I fight for it every day as that's my vision of the country that I want to leave behind for my child.

3/3 But the thought of having the government mass-buy meds (Bernie's idea) is NUTS. The same government that pays $400 for a hammer or $10,000 for a toilet seat cover is going to negotiate good pricing on meds? Are you KIDDING me?

2/3 Sure, I agree with letting people buy their drugs from Canada, the UK, or (if they're stupid enough) from the PRC. If they are paying out of their own pocket, who cares where they get their meds.

I'm extremely sympathetic to your story about your mom, but I do want to clarify: I believe it *IS* legal for Americans to import up to a 90 day supply of Rx drugs at a time. This has been a thing for many years now. My mom does it. Perhaps your mom's case is different somehow?

This is a huge problem with the drug industry. It should not be illegal to order from Canada. Vastly reduce patent duration to facilitate production of generics. And while TBH I do not support M4A for physical health, I do for mental health, though I'm likely unique in that view.

Thank YOU. I agree with everything you say, and I have lived over 45 years with someone who suffers from bipolar illness. Compounded recently by illnesses associated with age. Those who haven’t lived it seem unable to understand. I don’t see that changing.

Drug development is extremely expensive, b/c the drug cos develop many drugs that fail testing, so that cost must be rolled into the few drugs that make it to market. If first world countries paid the same as US, their prices would go up a little, but US prices would drop a lot.

This must happen. It is crazy for the US to be subsidizing first world countries, and for the US to be bearing the drug development cost alone. When u see comparisons of healthcare in US vs. EU or CA, remember we are subsidizing their drugs, bringing their total h/c costs down.
