So my mom is in an mental institution and will probably live out the rest of her life there. Not a way I wanted to start off a thread, but my family has seen America's mental health system inside and out, and maybe others deal with these problems. Here goes....

I find Robert Sapolski's material interesting - https://singjupost.com/transcript-stanfords-robert-sapolsky-on-depression-in-u-s-full-lecture/ … - particularly the possibility that depression may relate to problems w/ 3 diff neurotransmitters - serotonin, norepineprhine, dopamine - and there may be different types of depression, not just one thing.
-
Sapolsky's view not universally adopted: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/theory-knowledge/201704/how-understand-depression … (depression as "behavioral shutdown" response to unhealthy social environment)

90 percent of the body's serotonin is made in the digestive tract. Perhaps some high quality fermented foods and/or probiotics can help relieve some of the symptoms. My heart goes out to you

-
Interesting! Is there a probiotic you would suggest?

I think it’s very individual but here’s a great article on some compelling new evidence supporting this very topic.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/01/28/health/microbiome-brain-behavior-dementia.amp.html …

Holistic doctors find the root cause. It often is inflammation, or some organ dysfunction. They are MDs, not quacks. The pharmaceutical industry keeps the root causes out of medical textbooks so they can treat the symptoms. Good holistic doctors cure the underlying issue.

To me it's not knowing what to do about things I can't control. The pain (mental and physical) can get so intense. Pyschiatrists pound pills down your throat. (at the VA, anyways) They don't listen anymore. I had to stop and try to control it myself. It's hard, but I can think.

1986 I met my fathers brother for the first time, my parents divorced when I was 2 One of the first things he shared was that he had "Depression" and it was a physical condition Depression is like taking the abandoned road that is neither scenic nor speedy
-
I suffer from Depression, and my son has followed an eerily similar development as I did, but we intervened early and often with therapy and medication.
-
Clearly it is a disease, like a heart condition with there are many vectors to the same diagnosis as there are with most diseases Pretty much all mental health diseases/disorders are a matter of one of the most complex systems having differing designs & flaws in the construction

I would NOT let her take SSRI's. They are not as good as the older Rx's. SSRI's gave me horrible panic attacks. Ask her Dr's about Lamictal. Does the same as lithium, but not toxic. It's usually cheap through Medicare. Is she old enough for Medicare?

Leaky gut can be a cause. Serotonin is made in the gut. Our gut plays a huge role in our well being.

For anyone wanting to learn more about the causes of depression, @johannhari has studied and written about why we see an increase despite medical advances.

Gut flora...sertonin is produced in the gut... Poor diet causes inflammation and this hinders the production of serotonin.

Wow, such an honest, forthright and deeply personal thread you shared. I see you in a different light. Thank you for addressing mental illness, it is an epidemic in our country. As you touched on, the family members are deeply and irreparably affected by it as well.
