This has been endlessly debated in libertarian circles. Anyone who thinks UBI will take the place of the welfare system, rather than be just another addition to the myriad of ways government inefficiently redistributes wealth is kidding themselves.

Manitoba tried it. It lasted a very short time before the inevitable - people stopped working.

Have not done any research into UBI personally. My initial reaction is that it sounds like a terrible idea. Then I wonder how the cost would compare to what we pay for government & private company interests. Is that the argument?

It's a strategy to transition away from social programs by distributing robot-created wealth to the private sector as simple equal payments to all citizens because tech has eclipsed human productivity, hence job displacement.

UBI already exists. I think about my cousin. He is a 100% disabled vet. Not because he fought for his country but because after 6 months of serving a heart defect was identified. He lives on $3000 a month and doesn’t work. Plays games all day long and bitches about being single.

Once automation takes over, it’ll be the only way to stop the chaos.

Not really surprising though. Trump was given a shot to turn the economy on. He sorta did...but everyone's starting to realize the only real solution is a new paradigm to deal with the new reality of work.

It’s been done. Even here in the US in a negative tax rate experiment from 1968-80. Not once has it worked. It’s just another utopian fantasy being dredged out of the gutter again, for the umpteenth time.

Ohh look!!!!! Loads of people stumbled across something shiny, new & is the magic key, that in reality has been debated, experimented with and abandon to scrap heap ages ago

So, the BOTTOM RUNG of "The Ladder of Success" should be determined by a government official, NOT by people looking for kids to have their lawns cut?

Taking off means popular. As with music, it doesn’t mean it is good. In fact, popularity often means a diminishment from best.

I think UBI took off because of Star Trek.

Is this a UBI that replaces all forms of issue-specific welfare? Can it be used however the individual chooses? Or would it be a UBI of x for housing, y for food, z for utilities based on state/federal averages?

The paradox of solution. Every solution sets up the next crisis. UBI/welfare leads to degeneracy/ghettos/crime which the “solution” is robot police force which then becomes robot army for the elites.
