Accountability isn’t a threat to free speech. If anything, it ensures that Americans can have faith in the information we receive from the institutions that we are supposed to trust.
I used to think this until a newspaper in the Netherlands lied about me. I got a retraction within an hour after paying a local lawyer 300 Euros. In US, good luck. One bad google result and you’ll never get a job. Times changed. Actual malice is outdated in a Google world.

I don’t think it’s a threat at all. I think news outlets believe they can print and say whatever the hell they want (and mostly they’re right). They cry anytime they’re held accountable. Their lies and bulkshit stories cause actual damage. People wanted to find and hurt this kid!

Not to mention some journalist tweets/comments called for harm. I’m not sure it’s hard to show actual malice in a lot of the cases.
