- Overall, weight problems, educational deficits, criminal histories, and other problems now keep an estimated 75 percent of young Americans from being able to enlist. https://missionreadiness.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/CA-Unfit-to-Fight.pdf …

From what I understand, the Navy’s in worse shape than is being reported and in for an embarrassment if it gets challenged, in any significant way, in the greater China area.

20% can't pass the ASVAB? That was an easy test 25 years ago and I imagine it's become easier. Too many video games and not enough books.

Agreed but I don’t believe there will be another WWII style large scale war. Standoff weapons and automation will rule the next WW. Small wars, including the ones that follow the next WW are a different story though.

Also note in the last few years the Army, not sure of other branches, relaxed their entrance qualifications to try and get more recruits.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/10/10/army-accepting-more-low-quality-recruits-giving-waivers-marijuana-hit-targets/750844001/ …

This is why I believe we need to follow Japan on tackling its overweight issues. Imagine the uproar.

Mike, please keep in mind that in a WWII scenario, many of those bars to enlistment would go out the window. The military is selective when it can be, but when the need arises, any warm, breathing body will suffice.

Forget about “able to join” for a moment and just consider “willing to join.” The days of boys and young men committing suicide because they are *not* permitted to serve in defense of our nation, are so long gone it’s laughable to think we could win a WWII today.

Those standards would go down if there was another ww level engagement.

You can go from obese or out of shape to fit in 4 months easily, all while in training. Some recruits might need to be held back for a few weeks. The military doesn’t do this cause they’re not that desperate for recruits, and can just require recruits to get fit before entry.

Even if otherwise “fit” for battle, today’s young men don’t have enough heart to wage and win a WWII campaign.

Perhaps a federal military education opportunity should be considered, high school age, leg up when entering military service or college???

If push comes to shove, the minimum criteria will be changed, the fat & lazy guys will enlist, and the Army will get them in shape very quickly - the hard way...
