A good question. But an even better question: why are so many people with Type 2 diabetes using insulin therapy?

Demand. We have a ton of fat people with diabetes. It's not even normal to need it in the first place. The country needs to lose about 1000000000000000000000000000000 pounds. We never talk about this national emergency. Obesity kills.

Diabetes is close to #1 illlness in US now w 1 of ever 3 ppl being diabetic or pre-D. It’s the crisis no one talks about. That means 1of3 is or will be insulin dependent. Pure profit for dug cos.And few diabetics are ONLY insulin dependent. Most supplement w metformjn, glip., etc

Because there are more than 100 million people with either pre-diabetes or diabetes. Bad lifestyle choices and poor food quality are to blame. Our food is killing us. Much $ for big Pharma

All generic drug prices have skyrocketed this year. A generic drug I've been taking for years went from $10 to $24. As I was paying, another lady at the pick up counter was complaining how prices on all of her generic meds have increased drastically.

It's a hoax. The new stuff is marketed as better but the old stuff is as good.

There is multiple forms and analogues of insulin. New ones are much more expensive and rapid acting. You can still buy regular or “old” insulin for much cheaper but simply doesn’t work as fast and isn’t as modified.

Because it's an easy cash cow. Millions of people need to take it multiple times a day to live, it's protected by patents so no generic can be made, it's a biological, not synthetic, drug, meaning FDA authorization process would be extremely stringent even if someone tried.

Insulin, in general. is not patnet protected - only new formulations are.

I generalized due chars constraints: the most modern, most useful kind are (the kind that minimize glicemic peaks and lows due insulin introduction in the system). Also, http://apps.who.int/medicinedocs/en/m/abstract/Js22481en/ … Also https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/why_people_with_diabetes_cant_buy_generic_insulin … (still valid, 4 years later)

No generics? "drug companies have made incremental improvements that kept insulin under patent from 1923 to 2014."https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/why_people_with_diabetes_cant_buy_generic_insulin …

There is no good reason other than greed.

It`s, as i have just read partly because of the original agreement concerning Patents & consequential developments in the improvement in the drug itself. Written into any improvement progress was a clause that stifled competition thus inflating the price each time it was improved

My son is type one its unaffordable for most. I make decent money and I find it tough $1200.00 a month for Health Insurance $2,500.00 a year for his medical devices which is basically our deductible and $250.00 a month for prescriptions insulin amounts to $19,900.00 every year
