When I grew up in Illinois, we had to wake up every hour to run the water or the pipes would freeze, and when that failed, take a butane torch in the basement to heat the pipes to get the water unfrozen. I can still feel the pink fiberglass insulation brushing against my face.

Always use a hairdryer, never a torch.

Yup, that pink stuff was itchy, so I just left the taps open a little to prevent freezing on those really cold nights.

Try the old neon green indu-brand stuff. That shit from the 40s. Enjoy having no sinuses for a week. When I was fifteen, a spot of storm and bad maintenance wrecked the buoys at the dock where we lived. Had to freedive 20ft down in late-March Baltic water and shackle that shit.

My mother didn’t want to run the heat too often or too high. I remember seeing my breath and waiting for my turn in the bath hoping there would be enough hot water to warm me... I would sleep with a blanket over me and a vent, waiting for the rare moment it would blow warm air...

In 1940’s my dad’s dad couldn’t afford antifreeze so he had to drain radiator every night in winter freeze. They had no plumbing or electricity in home in Detroit Lakes, Mn. They walked 5 miles 2 school as children, even in below zero weather. They had nor took any public aid.

Guess they didn't have bleeder valves in Illinois back then? Or you could have just turned the faucet to a steady drip
