Can’t speak for the Marines, but the Army during that era was DESPERATE to re-enlist anyone with a pulse. The fact that this dirtbag left as a private speaks volumes about his service.
-
It's not the era, it's the year. The military was shedding people as fast as possible right after the Vietnam War ended.
-
It was longer than a year. As a commander, I was “encouraged” to re-enlist soldiers with worse records than Fridge Phillips. YMMV

The truth: Phillips a 3-feather member of the “AWOL” tribe, was always stationed w/in the states. At the lowest possible rank, Phillips received a less-than-honorable military discharged. His self-described “recon ranger” assignment is a “refer mech” Or was it smoking reefer?
