I think the correction is never to apologise when you have not done wrong. Socially pressure can make you confess to murder.

They're absolutely right. Yes, there will be flak for 48 or 72 hrs, but the outrage mob will inevitably move onto the next trigger. The psychology of the outrage mob is that it's the outrage they crave irrespective of the trigger. If you don't engage they will move on.
