I can see him saying, “All those labels get tossed around today,” and then changing his mode of thought halfway through. You’ve interviewed people. People aren’t precise with their words and unless you know how to clarify in real time, a kill quote is made.

I think this is exactly what happened. He switched gears mid-thought/mid-sentence. It happens. 100% of the people who condemned him didn’t bother to find the clarification. He’s been on their hit list forever; what he actually said didn’t matter.

True. People have off days. Very possible, esp given that it’s hard to imagine an elected lawmaker who actually was a racist so openly telling the nytimes of their prejudices

He was observing that, along with those other terms, "Western Civilization" is used as a term of abuse. His subsequent comment was an interjection about how ridiculous that was.

I agree, and it’s pretty obvious that’s what he meant. People dragging him have ulterior motives.
