If he backs off the wall, he’s toast in 2020. Not saying he’s backed himself into a corner, but if there’s no wall, he’s done. It’ll be two years of stalemate and a blue tsunami at the next election. Tax cuts and judicial nominees are not enough to bring out the republican base.

I do think he is serious about using the national emergency powers, but he will wait until AOC has mobilized protests by the millions and civil unrest and riots take hold. Now is too early to play the emergency card; the Democrats will undoubtedly not fold.

My estimate is it will take merely 4-6 weeks to get there. Cutting off people’s paychecks (and the other knock on effects) is a good way to piss people off on both sides. This can not realistically go on for long before the emergency card is played.

And realistically, the courts are likely to be able to do little in the immediate term to stop the wall. The only other thing to consider is a mass refusal / mutiny by the military to uphold what they see as an “illegal” order.

I agree but the thought that the military funding would be jeopardized was hung over Trump's head. I'm not sure I would've denied the funding either but it would've put the wall back in Ryan's lap, then he would've been accountable. As it is he escaped after destroying the House.
