And this is the negation of the Marxist philosophy of history which is premised on the idea of inevitable societal evolution - the inescapable result of "forces" (somehow Marxists consider this a "scientific" paradigm for viewing history)

I thought Sapiens sucked - and western civilisation tends towards alignment with human nature. Western civilisation is the rejection of our animal nature in favour of our human nature. But it takes a conscious effort to maintain - as is the nature of all things man-made.

Just got Sapiens from my son for Christmas. I disagree with your premise that society is subject to gravitation to the mean, though— it’s pretty clear that advancement is central to our history and trajectory over the long term (though I agree that it isn’t linear).

This reminds me of Ted Kaczynski, whose methods I don’t agree with, but Industrial Society and it’s Future was brilliant, and arguably totally correct.

Is bartering and subsistence farming in a Wild West-style society the bar for what's "natural"? Like the early settlers past the Frontier. Or would "natural" be something closer to a nomadic way of living with no agriculture and no semblance of society at all?

For western civilizations short comes , it is a heck a lot better than it has been. I’m not for giving up on it just yet. I don’t want a utopia, just the freedom to live as I see fit while balancing my freedom with yours.
