We are working poor. Lost everything with my daughter’s disability as my wife is her care giver. The only one who qualified for assistance was my disabled daughter. She gets Medicaid as secondary and a little money to cover some of the thousands we spend on med costs.

We were lucky to have family that could take us. If not for them we would be on the streets with a disabled child. I am not sure if we will ever be able to have a place on our own again.

There is a dividing line between welfare bums and people that are, um, significantly below the accepted living norms. Many are trapped between the point where you qualify for govt assistance and 'rich'. Things like section 8, taxes, outsourcing, work visas, etc are the problem

The problem with sympathy for the poor is that in middle/lower income communities we all know the welfare bums. People who refuse a regular job to protect their food stamps. People who spend a whole year planning their big tax return payday then blow it in one week on junk.

I live in a county where all the kids now receive free school lunch because of high number % of poverty. But the majority of people who are truly poor in our area are people who have made many bad decisions (drugs, unwise marriages, lack of monetary discipline).
