People who grew up working class have more stories than a canned line like, "My mom scrubbed toilets." I'll tell ya what it's like actually going up poor in America. First, you're ashamed to have friends come over to your house. Shame is a theme of growing up poor...

The phrases "Dirt poor" and "Without a pot to piss in" originated in the us & were about non-minoritys, anyone talking about growing up poor needs to research the origins of those phrases.

Maybe if those parts of the world held the same values, they'd get to have nice things too.

Whenever people talk about hungry kids I say: do you know how many kids go to school hungry in America, in LA my sister was a teacher in poor mainly low income black neighborhoods in LA school district, she felt bad and wanted to give them food everyday.

I didn’t grow up poor, but I think being hungry is one if the worst things that can happen to a child when you see others who have food

Don't you think it makes sense to really politically behind the plight of poor people? I WONDER IF ANY POLITICAL MOVEMENT EVER DID THAT. HMMMMM WHAT COULD IT BE.

Good thread. I remember when I discovered I was poor around the age of seven. Homemade clothing that always got mended and we grew our own food and traded meat. I knew I was poor when I wanted to get a toothbrush for a poorer friend and I was told no. She had green teeth.

< was born the kind of white trash not welcome in the average trailer park. Had kids 2 young, raised 3 in a 700sq cabin we built from salvage+ in Ak. Traded 4 electric install 5 years in. No plumbing. Poor sucks, but it is a relative concept. Poverty is a perverse state of mind.

Thank you for this thread. I grew up "just above poor", white, & in a suburb. While I lived many of these things, it was nothing compared to the scale & severity you describe. So I can only partly relate. As hard as it was for me, I can't even begin to imagine how it was for you.

There is poverty and there is pauperism. Paupers own NOTHING - everything they have they had to beg, borrow or steal to obtain, it’s a spiritual not material deficit. It’s a perpetual state of feeling like its never enough. AOC speaks to paupers.

You can’t discuss it because at base the American ethos says if you’re poor it’s your fault - not your responsibility but your fault. There’s a difference. I remember being in the US for the first time in the 80s and climbing over homeless people I had *never* seen in the movies
