Rich kids were worse than poor kids. A rich kid started a fight with me. I hit back. His friend jumped out from behind a car and sucker punched me. Back of my head was heard slamming into parking lot. Prosecutor was friends with kids dad. Rich kids get away with anything.

Ambulance took me to the hospital. $1,100 MRI bill. My parents asked states attorney to make the guy who was SEEN by multiple eye witnesses hitting me with brass knuckles pay the bill. The prosecutor was friends with them. “You don’t have a case.” He later became a judge.

That’s why I to this day have a lot of distrust for the rich. I never bought into the conservative lie about how great and virtuous rich people are. BUT. Rich people do create jobs, and that matters. Politically....There isn’t a place for people like us.

Later in life through hard work and a lot of luck - Never trust a “self-made” man or women who dismisses luck I ran in higher circles. Elite even. Seen both sides. This fan fiction about the virtuous rich is eye rolling at best.

What is the answer to poverty? I don’t know. I do know it’s getting worse in the U.S. When I go home I see the empty eyes of strong men. A lack of hope.

What do I mean by luck? When you’re poor, one accident could make a family homeless. There’s no real safety net. Cancer, a bad work accident....The lack of bad luck is as much an accident as catching a big break.

In many ways that’s why I was drawn to John Rawls’ political philosophy. A just society is one that eliminates or mitigates the role “bad luck” plays in our lives. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/justice-bad-luck/ …

Growing up poor takes people in different directions. This is one of the most powerful essays on growing up poor.https://whatever.scalzi.com/2005/09/03/being-poor/ …

Speaking of growing up poor...When I saw that video of a wrestler with deads getting his hair cut, the racial angle....I saw a prick referee. White kids had to cut their hair, too. These are the indignities poor kids of all races face. The lack of power.

I've noticed that kids who "got away with it" failed to learn that daddy couldn't buy their way out of car wrecks, addictions, or failed marriages. In my experience, kids who learned to pick themselves up and keep plugging away have done much better than their "rich" peers.

Dude you are spot on Man. Everyone talks about ohh just work hard and be smart and you will get ahead. Unfortunately that’s not the case it is very much “who you know” that is going to push you ahead and the problem is that when your in the hood you don’t know anyone like that.

Eric Holder once shared a story about getting pulled over for nothing. I understand he feels it was because of his skin, but I got pulled over for nothing and followed many times as white teenager in a junk car. I understood but he’d never get that I understood.

I lived it... And now that I'm grown, I tend to appreciate life even more. What I went through was a blessing for me and my family. From living in 2 homeless shelters as kids to eating out of trash cans in school... You name it.

My parents were dirt poor immigrants and still saved to put me & my 3 siblings into a private school w the richest kids in the state, in part to keep us away from the riff raff. I learned riff raff can wear sports coats & ties as much as the same jeans every day for a week.

It’s not a caste system. I know you said “sort of”, but man that is still a giant leap! I believe it is a natural cycle/progression for humans. I was super poor, but I raised myself up and am doing ok. I wouldn’t be if my parents didn’t point out the bad habits of poor friends.
