A master of fiction like Tom Wolfe or Neal Stephenson is able to embed a non-fiction lecture on a subject (social class / race in Wolfe's case) in a story. In Stephenson's case, he lectures on memes. I'd have to say though my pick for greatest book by an American is Endurance, Ernest Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing.
Bonfire is a masterpiece. Wolfe's technique come to full fruition. About as entertaining as any novel I've ever read.
