"The Bonfire of the Vanities" remains probably the greatest American book ever written, and gives you a deeper understanding of America today than any other work.https://www.amazon.com/Bonfire-Vanities-Novel-Tom-Wolfe-ebook/dp/B003GYEGNO/ …

Blood Meridian is probably the most accurate book about the human condition and true human nature. It's a fictional account, in a sense, of the book Sapiens. https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Meridian-Evening-Redness-International-ebook/dp/B003XT60E0/ …

"Read fiction like it's non-fiction." Fiction represent the author's view of the world. It's his or her truth packed into invented characters. Hence why reading fiction gives people a deeper understanding of the human condition than on-fiction does.https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/novel-finding-reading-literary-fiction-improves-empathy/ …

"Politics is downstream from culture," because most people learn about the world and form their mental models (Charlie Munger's term) from stories - though usually those stories come from films and shows rather than novels.

A master of fiction like Tom Wolfe or Neal Stephenson is able to embed a non-fiction lecture on a subject (social class / race in Wolfe's case) in a story. In Stephenson's case, he lectures on memes. Snow Crash is my favorite fictional book.https://www.cernovich.com/snow-crash-neal-stephenson-book-review/ …

I thought Fussell’s essay collection Thank God for the Atom Bomb and Other Essays was interesting, too. The titular article from that book: https://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/iakh/HIS1300MET/v12/undervisningsmateriale/Fussel%20-%20thank%20god%20for%20the%20atom%20bomb.pdf …

I don't know a culture that isn't obsessed with class. It's a human thing. It's an animal thing. There's a hierarchy everywhere. It's one of the struggles of the animal kingdom.
