College sports are inherently exploitative and college athletes should be paid generous salaries. Legacy admissions should be abolished, along with unpaid internships, as they create structural barriers to upward mobility.https://twitter.com/joshchafetz/status/1076817258792521733 …

I just *know* all the folks upset about David Hogg getting into Harvard with low SATs but impressive extracurricular activities apply the same critique to universities’ athletics programs. Right?

Nonsense. Many unpaid internships are more valuable than expensive college classes.

Minor league baseball players barely squeak by. Many college athletes get the benefit of a scholarship worth many times what they would get in a free market. I would support whatever would best help college athletes, but I’m not convinced they would get generous salaries.

The only part I disagree with is that just because a college education costs 200k for example, doesnt mean its worth 200k

The price of a college education is definitely inflated. But most players in the minor leagues are paid less than $7500 for the year.

So minors is a bit of a different story. Minors generates little profit, the coaches are trying to prove themselves too. College football makes coaches and others rich (other than the athletes)

On principle I support college football players being paid. It’s an open question whether paid collegiate sports would be more profitable than minor league baseball. But I suspect it would mean the effective end of NCAA football and a vast reduction in value for most players.

For the most part I disagree with you on this. Baseball, Basketball, they have alternative paths to a professional career so guys playing college sports are doing it for the free education. Football is different and should really stop using college as a developmental league.
