What concerns me is that ppl started discussing this after Sargon and Sam Harris. What about the Patreon censorship happening to smaller accounts this past year? The future belongs, in part, to those who have their ears to the ground.

So the lawsuits should allege that these companies are arms of the government violating the free speech protections of the first amendment?

A bank cannot deny service to someone for the same reasons Patreon denies service. Considering the shift into crowd funding and the medium in which Patreon and others serve in that capacity, it's not a crazy idea. Just a hard one to set precedent for.

Why can't a bank refuse to open an account with someone who expresses hate speech (whatever that means) or violates whatever terms of service the bank wishes to uphold?

Besides the fact that hate speech has no legal definition in America: Investors. Pure and simple. I'm not entirely sure if federal insurance regulations are also a reason, but any bank that excludes a customer base so broadly rarely lasts long before going under.
