Mad Magazine, a long time ago, didn't have any ads, so they could "make fun" of anyone or any company they wanted. Then, all of a sudden, they had ads & I stopped buying their magazine.

In many ways they do. Chomsky and Herman covered this extensively in their 1988 book, Manufacturing Consent. They did it from a leftest perspective, but the mechanics are the same.
