Having gone to school in DC, unpaid internships are a way of life. These internships are coveted, and if you didn't want it, someone else would gladly take them, gain the experience, and move past you in the next tier job market.

This feels like it misses the point. It's not that certain people don't want it enough. Many do want it, but real life circumstances prevent all but the privileged few from being able to accept it. That's structural bias at work.
-
That's the dilemma. As an immigrant suffering through school, it was unpleasant. But you're already disadvantaged. If you don't make sacrifices, you'll stay disadvantaged. And most competitive ones struggled through unpaid internships to remain competitive with classmates.

Funny the strange bedfellows we find ourselves with on certain issues
-
You are right. How can we make it so we have more of these odd bedfellows?
-
I'm afraid we'd have to agree on things more often.
-
imo, we do agree on a lot. Order of priority, the how to, and some tribal ideology (not necessarily in that order) keeps us in limbo. Better gov(taxes used to help), cheaper health care, more middle class, less lobbying, and opportunities for a better life I believe is bipartisan

Totally agree with you on this Mike. The Clinton Foundation is a perfect example.

"Living wage" is a long dead and failed message. This is not a populist talking point.

All the people who dunked on AOC are going to realize and soon regret she’s more relatable than most Rs in government.

Internship in government and business is barter. Work in exchange for education and experience. Should be subject to barter Tax.
-
I feel internships are much more important and valuable than many degree programs at schools.

@Ocasio2018 The general point is a good one; however, the R-controlled house passed a minibus a few months ago that funded paid interns, and Trump signed it. https://internsdc.com/im-positive/paid-capitol-hill-interns-wish-applauds-president-trump-u-s-congress-for-enacting-147-billion-minibus-bill-into-law/ … Also, there's less than a $1k difference in the avg. staff salary btw Rs and Ds offices.

Look at paid work experience politicians have. Adam Schiff comes from a family that owns interest in the Federal Reserve Bank. Paul Ryan drove a wiener wagon.

Another reason for people to refuse them and work for themselves.
