How do cells know what to become? , who joins the LMB today, aims to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern cell identity, a fundamental question that involves multiple levels of biological organisation. Welcome to the LMB!

We've started a new Google group dedicated to Brain organoids. Check it out and join us! We want to create an open community to discuss methods, technical difficulties, and uses of organoids:

This is what I have been saying for a long time. Of course they are not actually miniature brains, far from it. Seems like the overhyping is often from those newer to a field, while I have tried to be clear in my seminars where they fail. That said...

It is very inspiring to have my lab now in the same division that Crick first started in the LMB in 1962. The signed chalk board next to my lab is a reminder of his presence. He had such foresight!

"They will also have to create the right spirit, something which may take time." I know of at least one place in the UK where that very spirit already exists: . Interesting fact: its unique research culture was established by a European immigrant: Max Perutz.

I don’t have the tweetorial chops of but here is our new story on ribosome-associated quality control of a poly topic membrane protein. When TMDs aren’t handled properly, translation is attenuated.

John Shin & Loewen lab show that in acidified cells PI4P cannot be detected by PH domains, so glucose starvation inhibited sterol transfer by yeast OSBP (Osh1) . PI4P protonation preventing effector binding will shift the paradigm.

Pioneering molecular biologist Sydney Brenner was born . Brenner realised that the worm C. elegans could be used to see mutations introduced into genes as distinct changes in organ formation. His visionary work created an important research tool.
