While still being funny as hell. Pratchett used humour like a surgeon, getting people to relax and open up before he brought in the sledgehammer of righteous fury.

From everything I’ve read it sounds like a complete mess. They’ve changed some characters completely and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to match the tone of the “Watch” books (comic noir).

I mean yes and no. Discworld is a satire for the most part and it's rather equal parts humour and grit bound mostly by Pratchett's humanism. Buuuuut this could be bad.

The humour often involves sly digs at contemporary culture.

Well nothing can be worse than the Sky adaptions...reads character list ... no Fred Colon or Nobby Nobbs...and Lady Sybil isn't fat...burn it with fire.
-
No Colon? He's the heart of the watch, it wouldn't be the same without him.

These sets look like the right vibe for Ankh-Morpork to me... Pratchett spends a LOT of words on what a dirty busy trash-heap of a city it is. And the Watch stories are noirish.
-
I don't recall the streets of Dolly Sisters being littered with electrical fans...
