    Some scientists posted a that was flashy ("uncanny", "astonishing"), apparently not very careful, and wrong. Within hours, half a dozen experts commented that it was wrong and showed why it was wrong. This IS how it's supposed to work.

    These short inserts do indeed exist in relative to its closest sequenced relative (BetaCoV/bat/Yunnan/RaTG13/2013, seen here ). However, a simple BLAST of such short sequences shows match to a huge variety of organisms. No reason to conclude HIV.

    The recent report that has short sequence insertions from -1 are completely bullshit. There’s a perfect match within the closest related bat CoV.... such obviously flawed conclusions are a disservice to science and to humanity.

    One of the examples gave was the common deletion in the APOBEC3 region which effectively removes the APOBEC3B gene. A variant that is very common in some parts of the world.
