Reminder to those shocked by the Stephan verdict that naturopaths in AB are still misleading the public. Their college was alerted to this website but did nada.

And let’s end bullying. It’s a big goal but if we as adults lead the way, we can bring kids up to look out for the person who is different, being excluded, feeling lonely. Talk to them about empathy and standing up for others. That’s the world I want our kids want to live in

It’s our job as adults to equip our kids with tools to live safely. Like drivers ed, kids need lessons on phone use Let’s stop handing smartphones to young children and teens and expecting them to ‘figure it out’ and ‘self regulate their use’ because clearly they can’t do it

Let’s teach our kids: * to look out for one another * that popularity at all costs is not something to strive for * that drugs are dangerous * that it’s their duty to reach out to an adult when another child is in danger * that when one of us is in pain, we are all suffering

The obsession with social media popularity combined with immature brains, and a lack of adult supervision and teaching, resulted in a tragic death. Can we please not let this death be in vain? Let’s teach our kids to use a phone, and social media properly.

The pathological quest for “likes” and “views” has created a culture of ‘celebrity at any cost’. Phones have created a culture where we have lost the ability to understand pain and danger. When viewed through a screen, these things have lost meaning.

The fact that all those bystanders watched the overdose and didn’t alert an adult means: 1) they didn’t know what they were seeing 2) they found it entertaining 3) no one had ever talked to them about social media content to alert an adult about

Parents are busy, distracted by work, life, and their own phones. Kids are walking around with a mini computer in their pocket. If a child has not explicitly been taught safe phone use, responsible social media posting, and being a digital citizen, this is a recipe for disaster

This immature prefrontal cortex is one of the reasons we delay drivers licenses until later teen years, alcohol until even later. Yet, for the last decade, something as dangerous as alcohol and driving, has been handed to young children with little supervision ~ smartphones

Teens lack a fully developed prefrontal cortex: the part of our brain that helps us understand risk and make good decisions. It takes until the mid 20s for this part of the brain to be fully functional. This puts teens at high risk for engaging in dangerous behaviours.

Now, there were more people involved. Dozens? Hundreds? Receiving Snapchats over the course of hours. Watching him go from intoxication to overdose. Yet no one, not a single teen alerted an adult that anything dangerous was going on.

The teens who gave him the drugs may not have been able to recognize the stages of overdose he was exhibiting. He needed help. He need to get to an emergency department. Instead, he became the subject of social media videos 😢

this was a vulnerable teen. The things that made him different were what the bullies targeted. Adolescents just desperately want to belong and be liked. He thought they were his friends. They gave him drugs and they watched while he started to have dangerous symptoms; did nothing

There are 2 major issues to this story: the bullying and the role that smartphones played. talks about 3 roles in any bullying situation: The bully, the bullied and the (not so innocent) bystander
