For me, the "ancient" argument is most plausible when the practice seems entirely physiological (independent of a metaphysic) and it's cross-cultural, e.g. giving birth in a squatting position.

Interestingly reiki is barely on the radar in Japan, and most older people there think it has something to do with talking to the dead because the character “rei” means “ghost”. Those who do know it generally think it’s ridiculous.

Diseases don’t care where their treatments were invented, it only matters if the treatment works. Those try to who emphasize a treatments’ value based on it being ‘eastern’ are selling ‘mystique’, not providing care.
