But do people mind it from hospital staff? I've always thought it adds a bit of homey-ness to being stuck in a hospital bed or there on a visit. I feel like certain jobs are emotionally hard on people, and letting them sort of coddle the patients helps make it feel worthwhile.

Here in the American south, a lot of people call each other “dear” or “sweetie,” and deeper south “darlin’ is common.
