i've said earlier that the anti-silent sam protests at carolina show antifascist mobilizations inevitably end up confronting police brutality, and now aspects of america's empire, labor organizing, and cuts to education budgets are part of what those folks are fighting.

there's a growing strike by TAs at UNC in the face of the decision to run up a $5.3 million dollar shrine for a monument to the slave state while student fees have gotten hiked, and the admin hired someone who trained death squads in El Salvador to advise on security.

hell, at least one of the cops that worked crowd control in chapel hill had a far right tattoo on his arm, and what's more, the resources and responses refined here in this struggle will be put to use by the government in 2020 when protests happen in Charlotte during the RNC.

the notion that antifascist work is a sideshow or naught but a spectacle and the best way to handle fascists is just ignore them is a big bunch of cosseted, ignorant horseshit.

this work isn't just going out and brawling with anyone at random. it's showing up for court dates, making sure you have food and water on hand in case people need it during the action, that you have street medics handy in case someone gets hurt.

building the capacity to do all of these things pays off in other contexts. turning out people to a court date to support someone arrested on bullshit is a skill that's good to turn people out to a government open meeting.

having medics and aid on hand for antifascist mobilization teaches you how to do that for other protest actions, either in support of labor pickets or against racist immigration policies.

another example of how this shit overlaps: stephen yaxley-lennon sucked down hundreds of thousands of pounds in donations on unaccountable moral abscess facebook. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/dec/07/tommy-robinson-global-support-brexit-march …

the street level scum are just the most glaringly obvious example of the current system's morbidities, and inevitably when you swing a metaphorical hammer at them you will find another six or seven things to turn your hands against.
