Now do the costs of a college degree, rent, and medical care.
-
-
-
All of those things are regulated by the government and, surprise, becoming more expensive. Fun chart. https://img.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/files/2016/08/price_changes.jpg …
-
Yeah, because unregulated medical care, education, and housing couldn't possibly go wrong.

-
The world would be such a pleasant and simple place if government agencies were better than businesses at producing quality products at low prices. Unfortunately they aren't - which is why we have markets...
-
It's not the government's job to produce products. It's their job to make sure that people have recourse from unscrupulous businesses. Ergo, regulations.
-
more regulation = higher prices (usually)
-
Regulation also means legal remedies when people are cheated by fraudulent landlords or companies or they're harmed by faulty products. Can regulations be excessive? Sure. But they exist because the government has a duty to keep their citizens safe.
-
Private companies also only consider monetary costs. Unsurprising that asthma is in decline with regulations such as catalytic converter. Of course DuPont was mad because it didn't work with their leaded gasoline additives and lobbied against it because it'd "raise costs."

now do healthcare
-
And rent.
-
Now do college education
-
all three of these are deep in bed with the government you do know
-
Sort of, but public healthcare, public education and public housing are all far more affordable than private ones.
-
Now do childcare. And if you want some help, here's a tool to let you compare rent, college, and childcare costs by state. (Hint: childcare is the most expensive of the three in a majority.)

Comparing by state doesn't even give an accurate picture, especially in larger states with only a few population centers. When I lived in Montana those "number of wage hours to afford a two-bedroom rental" articles drove me up a wall.
-
Sure. I live in one of the more expensive parts of my state, so I get that. I do think it's somewhat helpful here, though, as this is a rent:childcare:public college cost *comparison.* The individual costs may not be accurate for all areas, but they tend to fluctuate relatively.

Do insulin next!
-
Soaring insulin prices: the unregulated free market at work. It's great if you own stock in the companies that sell insulin. But I'd love to hear someone from
@CatoInstitute explain why it's good for society that they're able to charge so much money for life-saving medicines. -
Because sick people will give all their money to stay alive and after that they'll die? It's a win-win, both the corporations and Cato win, that is
-
Just further proof that the free market = extortion
