With respect, I think you're ignoring Andrew's main point -- namely, that the campus-style leftist politics have largely taken over mainstream public life.
Really? I could have sworn a racist, sexist, xenophobic demagogue is POTUS, an anti-gay evangelical is VP and a literal walking Confederate monument runs the Justice Dept. 
I would suggest that just as Sullivan exaggerated trends within campus life based on press coverage, he has exaggerated trends in public debate based on social media consumption.
But social media do play an outsized role in public life today, so I'm not sure it's an exaggeration. Also, online media in general show the same trends
