So this @BostonGlobe piece on #AmericanDirt is basically a lengthy rationalization for why the author loved the book at first but hated it once it was anathematized by the One True Faith.https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/01/30/arts/i-wanted-review-american-dirt-then-i-didnt-heres-why/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter …

Also amusing: writer Clea Simon seems totally oblivious to the fact that she could be next. For instance, this passage in which she pats herself on the back for her allyship could be very easily recast as dripping with white-saviorism. (Simon is white.)pic.twitter.com/JfBiV0UJDT

The progressive worldview, in its singular focus on the 'care/harm' moral foundation, has no language to describe any of the contradictory elements of the human psyche. It has no use for art, not because it dislikes it, but because it is unable to recognize it.

This is not a book I'd have read anyway. But I'm really interested in this saga because: a) cancelation of the book tour due to "threats" and b) the mind-bending open letter to Oprah that 83 authors penned, requesting she rescind her rec.

This isn't a feature of "progressivism", it's a feature of all moral systems: how you do a thing matters. I mean, "hi, I just wanted to tell you you're beautiful" and "HEY SEXY GIMME YOUR DIGITS" are both compliments--doesn't mean both will be taken the same way.

The FT review of the book mentions the “p” word, but goes on to highlight the positives of the book, especially the research that went into things like a notorious train migrants use. They describe the section as gripping, meanwhile USA Today thought the same section problematic

"Recognize me and my lived experience but don't overdo it." Charitably speaking, that's a sentiment I can come to sympathizing with but the vitriol people are met with who seek to identify that very opaque boundary when there's enormous pressure to do is wildly counterproductive
