I am still bewildered that women find that ... interesting? Sexy? OTOH, “Phantom of the Opera” is “romantic”, to a lot of women, which is WAY too Stockholm Syndrome for me.

Well. I have a close friend (married, 2 kids, AND a scientist) who is in the Phantom fandom and writes phantom fanfic.
BUT, it's a sequel that takes it out of the stalkerish context and is about Christine "growing up." The dynamic in Phantom can be done in different ways.

50 shades of crap! I can't believe it sold millions, and the majority of the fans are women. I read the first book, when the movie came out, to see what the fuss was all about. I just couldn't finish it. Never in my life I wanted to kill both protagonists as much as in this book.
