I’m for prison abolition (eventually) and releasing non-violent offenders at least until COVID resolves. But police are arresting people for assault daily in the Tenderloin. Are they then releasing offenders back onto the streets? @chesaboudin

It's terrible to witness assaults for sure, but anecdotes aren't a great way to measure crime rate. According to the SFPD's data, since the SIP, assault and robbery in the TL are down almost 40%. Larceny theft is down 78%! The crime rate isn't zero, but it's certainly down.pic.twitter.com/R4jHD3i3Mk

That's great. But I'm still seeing 20 assaults per month in the TL. That's a lot. A. What is the DA's office doing to make assaults, robberies, and theft less common? B. Don't we need to lower these further to get broad support for the kinds of reforms we both want to see?
