The term "folk" (i.e. "folk lore"/ "folk medicine") has gone out of vogue in anthropology because it sounds a bit condescending. But I think it helps communicate a difference from scientific knowledge. We can say "race is a folk taxonomy that isn't useful to geneticists. 2/2

Btw, I do not engage with racist trolls, I block them. So if you’ve come here to spout scientific racism shite, don’t bother.

It’s like breeds of dog, or subspecies. Different medical conditions (sickle cell), different dentition even. Of course we are all “dogs”, but like them we are very much different. http://www.ijofo.org/article.asp?issn=2542-5013;year=2017;volume=2;issue=1;spage=38;epage=42;aulast=Rawlani …

I can’t speak for anthropology, but I like the use of “social construct” in philosophy (it’s helpful for my own research). I think it would be helpful to explain what one actually means when using “social construct” instead of just throwing it out.

I really enjoy hearing your perspectives from philosophy. I'm going to reply again with a couple of tweets from other responders for you to think about & (if you feel like it) respond to in turn.

I like this framing a lot.

This super contradicts the Social Justice idea that historical people didn’t think in terms of race until “race science” was invented by the enlightenment. Either way, it seems to me that all this arguing about framing is just a way to avoid having to think about the conclusions.

I agree it’s not enough to say race is a construct. “Folk taxonomy” may help, but we need to emphasize other parts of the critique, too: (1) human bio variation is real, just not racially patterned, (2) bio variation is not reducible to genes, (3) race is a product of racism.
-
Yes, agree with that. I suggest this only as a way to communicate that we’re dealing with social classification rather than natural kinds.
