Delighted to say that I'm embarking on a new postdoc with Prof. Mark Flinn @ Baylor! Will be focusing on biomedical anthro, child health, family relationships & continuing research into cooperation & trauma on the Human Generosity Project . Fieldwork in Dominica!

  2. There is no racial purity. You are descended from multitudes, from around the world.

  3. Users of white supremacy websites like Stormfront express great anxiety about DNA test results. They desire test results revealing mostly northern European ancestry. All kinds of conspiracy theories & ad hoc explanations are created when they do not.

  4. DNA ancestry products have also been co-opted by white supremacist groups who use them to try to prove their own racial purity and gate-keep their idea of whiteness. They obsess over, & misinterpret, scientific papers on population genetics.

  5. The remainder of the chapter deals with issues to do with DNA ancestry products. The simplified narratives these products rely on may increase essentialist ideas about nationality & race. They tend to oversimplify complex genetic information.

  6. Shedding of DNA over generations means it's possible to be genetically unrelated to your actual ancestors who lived in the middle of the 18th C. This undermines the idea of using genetics to define membership to a race or other identity.

  7. In the age of Brexit, a delightful passage from Dr Rutherford reminding us what mongrels British people are.

  8. Racism with a pseudoscientific basis is not unique to white supremacists. This is illustrated by the Rwandan genocide of 1994: animosity between Hutu & Tutsi was based on categories imposed by Belgian colonists who imported ideas from the eugenics movement.

  9. Dr Rutherford goes on to describe more about what modern genetics has and has not revealed about the movements of people over the course of history. One major lacuna is the relative lack of genetic studies in Africa, the most genetically diverse continent.

  11. Dr Rutherford describes some of the fascinating history behind how people have moved around the world and mixed up our genes. For example, when Colombus & his men invaded the Caribbean in 1492, European ancestry was introduced into the Americas.

  12. Genetic isopoints: a time in history when the entire ancestral population is the ancestor of the entire contemporary population. The global isopoint is 3,400 years ago. You are descended from everyone who was alive in the world in the 14th C BCE.

  13. The way we tend to think about our ancestry leads to false intuitions, for example the idea that racial groups evolved separately. With a limited number of possible ancestors, we're all more closely related than you might think.

  14. Dr Rutherford points out that white supremacists cling to a nonsensical notion of "Western culture", which they also seem to feel a great deal of anxiety about.

  15. One key fact really jumped out at me & I think it underpins everything in this chapter. Everyone alive today is descended from all the global population that lived 3,400 years ago. Let that sink in!

  16. Chapter 2: Your Ancestors Are My Ancestors. An extremely powerful chapter tackling how racist ideas are based on a flawed understanding of genealogy.
