What Martin Luther rejects "idle faith", Trent likewise does: For which reason it is most truly said, that Faith without works *is dead, and idle*; and In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by charity (ses 6, chap 7)
But do works justifies us before God? Or are they evidence of the faith that justifies us?
They're neither, even Abraham did not need to prove his faith to anyone, God knew he had it, and Jacob had no idea about the concept of justification to question his Father. Also, works are as rags. Works are the byproduct of a faith active in love for God, and then man.
God knew he had it and that faith credited Abraham unto righteousness, which is Justification. Works are the result of a saving faith that justifies us before God.
Okay, but if works are merely epistemic, and not a part of faith at all, why was there a need for Abraham to demonstrate it when God already knew, and Isaac knew not what justification was in the context of the covenant?
