  1. I will message him in the morning, to seem more normal and calm.

  2. I’ve reached the point of the mask/hand sanitizer/rubbing alcohol shortage where I’m looking for trustworthy sources about how well vodka disinfects. I *could* ask my uncle, a chemistry professor, but I don’t feel ready yet to answer his questions about my questions.

  6. Since no one asked, there were conversations happening around customs that were about racism and cultural appropriation, but got picked up by sites like Fandom Wank because it looked like people were arguing about dolls. Which they were, but the overall themes were important.

  7. ^ if anyone of you want to hear more about this, ask me about the time I spent on Blythe and other doll customization forums ~2005-2010. Just be sure to free up all your mental and emotional headspace for the month. I have a lot to unpack. It was an intense time.

  8. (This can put me on a whole other tangent about how frustrating it is that "niche" communities are dismissed, even though many of them allow ideas to germinate that eventually influence a wider segment of society).

  9. As always, when approaching something as an outsider, the best thing to do might just be to listen, observe, be empathetic and learn for a while before jumping in or lecturing people.

  10. Basically, there are spaces where people may find a community where they feel safer discussing certain topics, but just because that dialogue is happening in public doesn't erase-or even alleviate-the problems, and dismissing their opinions is pernicious.

  11. Also important for dialogue within minority groups. I've seen similar issues in my "niche" communities, like knitting. Each is a reflection of wider society, including issues like racism. People may feel safer confronting those issues there, but there is still pushback

  12. I am thinking specifically of communities here and elsewhere, where people who have typically been disconnected are able to gather. This is really the first place I've been able to talk about Taiwanese identity or politics without someone shouting me down.

  13. When analyzing a situation, it is important to remember who holds the balance of power. It sounds obvious, but I think people mistake social media chatter, especially when there is a lot of it, as "power," when it might be the only way for those people to be heard in aggregate.

  14. Masks are usually so ubiquitous in stores and easy to purchase that that it's something I've never had to think about before. I took it for granted that whenever I was sick, I could grab a pack at 7-Eleven along with bottles of FIN and some instant noodles.

  15. Honestly, a lot of the thinking, talking and posting about masks is to alleviate my own anxiety. My husband and I are saving our surgical masks for our toddler (ie when she has a class or appt at a place that requires masks), or emergencies (knock on wood).

  17. This was a helpful one: Main things I learned were: wearing gloves, washing my hands very frequently and thoroughly, and not touching my face and eyes FFS are more important than masks.

  18. Honestly after reading articles about how coronavirus is transmitted, I’m realizing that most of the colds and flus I’ve had were probably the result of me fiddling with my face all the time.

  19. The Watson’s near Tonghua Night Market. I got some pitta masks, mostly bc wearing them will remind me to stop touching my face. Also wearing eye makeup for that reason-the mascara all over my hands will remind me to knock it off.

  20. My 7-Eleven restocks masks around 2am, so I was right about their logistics schedule. I knew tracking all those 蝦皮, 露天 and 博客來 orders would make me smart at...something.
