Let's talk about detransitioners. The favourite subject of many cis people, detransitioners are amplified and lionised by certain transphobic groups in ways no trans person ever is, because detransitioners are seen as categorical 'evidence' that transition is wrong.
Arguably the most famous detransitioner is Walt Heyer, a man who admits that he manipulated his way through transition when he should never have been allowed to. Even though he is not representative AT ALL of trans women, he is constantly brought up as a reason to ban transition.
People like Walt are RARE. I want to make that clear. We are a very connected community. Not many trans people personally know a detransitioner - and those that know more than one are even rarer. And yet detransitioners get disproportionate amounts of attention.
But the recent trend of detrans discussions isn't about people like Walt. It's about supposedly detransed trans men. If you are to believe the transphobic rhetoric being pushed, there's an EPIDEMIC of detransitioning transmasculine people. (Spoiler: it's all lies)
Firstly, most of these 'detrans' stories come from largely anonymous Twitter and Facebook accounts. Secondly, these accounts often use stolen stock avatars of women of colour, and they were created in the last 8-12 months. If you look for older 'detrans' accounts, you won't many.
When there IS a real presence behind these stories of detransition, i.e. actual photos or video, 99% of the time it is someone who (let me capitalise for emphasis) DID NOT MEDICALLY TRANSITION IN ANY WAY. No hormones. No surgeries. No 'permanent physical changes'.
Again, the instances of people having large-scale medical intervention and regretting it are INCREDIBLY RARE. And you know what else? The regret is often not about the medical interventions; it is about having to navigate a world that is still very transphobic in many ways.
But back to those accounts being created in the last 8-12 months. I believe they are part of a sustained campaign to push the narrative that large numbers of transmasculine people will come to regret transition. And part of that campaign is pushing YouTube detrans videos on us.
I don't watch trans-related material on YouTube, yet I've had 'detrans' videos suggested to me, as have other people. Again, the amount of attention that 'detransition' is garnering is UTTERLY DISPROPORTIONATE to the number of actually detransitioners out there. Don't be fooled.
Detransitioners exist, yes. Detransitioners deserve love and support, because they are human beings. But they make up a tiny proportion of an already small population of people. And those that have all medical interventions and then regret it? They are an even tinier minority.
I've known two. one person went on hormones and very quickly realised they didn't actually want it they just liked crossdressing. minimal permanent changes no harm done. the other detransitioned because of transmisogyny they didn't feel safe transitioning
funny how the cis ignore the fact that in the very small category of people who 'detransition' or have regret the reason is often transphobia/transmisogyny
