I'm going to add some films that I think are appropriate for teenagers: a fair bit of Spielberg, Stand By Me, some Spike Lee, The Piano, a lot of Merchant-Ivory, a lot of screwball classics, Some Like It Hot, the Marx brothers, all musicals except Dancer In The Dark, all romcoms.

Some films I saw before the age of 14: Witness, The Silence of the Lambs, Casino, Kes, Empire of the Sun, The Third Man, Pretty Woman, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Remains of the Day, Rebecca, Queen Margot, Clerks, La Haine, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Take some risks!

Every Studio Ghibli film is right there too. Or the collected works of Michael Haneke? The Piano Teacher didn’t do me any harm when I watched it as a 12-year-old.

Nah to fair the OP says they've watched all of Ghibli. But yeah, The Piano, some Spike Lee, it's all good!

"Yes, but can you recommend any films at all which have shot lengths which do not exceed 7 seconds? We watched the original Star Wars films and they were s l o o o w." "Tie them to an armchair without their mobiles and make them watch Béla Tarr. After that, Loach is snappy a.f."

I re-watched Robocop the other week and rung my dad afterwards to question his judgment of showing me it aged 8. His stance of it being a cool film, I liked it and I’ve turned out normal was hard to argue with.

But not necessarily *with* parents! For me that’s the key criterion - a film that the parents can watch with the teenagers without anyone dying of embarrassment

100% this. Steer away from hyper-violent or sexual content if you’re concerned about that, but teenagers don’t need kids’ films.

100%. I saw The Apartment when I was 13 or 14 and it's been my favourite film ever since.

Thinking of the scene in the Nick Cave doc where he watches Scarface with the twins, all giggling gleefully.
