To be fair to Giuliani (I lived right by the Mansion back then)...we were all panicked...the trucks at Gracie were deemed necessary...they were also present at Carl Schurz Park right by the mansion...it made parents feel safer when we took our kids to play there in the aftermath.
I lived across the street at 180 East End. What about the rest of the city? Or the parents of children dwtn who were breathing toxic smoke for months while Rudy got out of his SUV all the way uptown wearing a face mask. Rudy had the trucks for his protection not ours my friend.
So we were neighbors...and thankfully (for us) the fumes blew away from the upper East Side....Giuliani seized upon the moment and extended his mayoral term too if I remember correctly. And yes, totally for him...but those first few days were nuts...no one was thinking straight
I was a mile away from WTC on 23rd. Ran through plumes of thick, noxious smoke & debris rushing up 7th to fetch my kids from school. We saw tower 2 collapse from our top floor apt window. The days after are a blur but I remember guys w/ machine guns, military aircraft above,
