I'd say that, in this analogy, they aren't really convinced they're actually getting high. They're aware it's not working for them, but that's not gonna stop them from denying it and getting hella pissed at anyone who points it out.

I have relatives like that. Hard working, otherwise decent but convinced Trump could fix job situation, economy, etc. One said, give Trump 2 yrs? The other shrug his shoulders when I pointed out the atrocities committed by Trump
