The constitutionality of trying an ex-president is an issue that could be argued at the senate trial, perhaps with experts from both sides. But 45 Republican senators voted to dismiss before hearing arguments. They swore an oath as jurors. Then they voted for jury nullification.

What is the constitutional argument in favor?

Eh, I think there's enough debate about this that we would all benefit from a SCOTUS decision on it, but yeah, the Senate as an absolute right to dismiss a trial that they're conducting if a majority of senators choose to. It's a political process all the way through.

Cats aren’t elected to offices of public trust. Republicans have violated their oath to the constitution repeatedly! What if they had a majority right now? When an entire party less a handful puts politics & self interest above the constitution & country, it’s a crisis period!

Shouldn’t that be decided after hearing arguments?

It's a legal question. Senators don't need to have a trial and present evidence before deciding the bare legal question about what the Constitution says. They're just wrong.
