While the state is necessarily, it is a necessary evil and people can ultimately govern themselves better than that state

That is my understanding of conservatism and the reason it does make sense to me. To me, egoism and greed are the evils that we can never entirely defeat, with only cooperation/community and love to keep them at bay.

That government’s main function should be securing individual liberty.

Whilst this is a key feature of conservatism as is, I don't think it's a necessary feature of it. Conservatives believe in conserving the best parts of their heritage, and in our case (the US and the UK) individual liberty and the rule of law are core parts of that.

Suffering is the natural state of humanity and anything that has been built up as a bulwark against that state should get the benefit of the doubt in terms of preservation.
