FRIYAY DATA DUMP

Yesterday, Speaker Pelosi put out the 2019 Compensation and Diversity Study Report on House staff. Here's the Exec. Summary: https://bit.ly/2nPUyFu
Solid response rate of 51.1%.
I had to check its results against my own data. Follow along...

Next, race and ethnicity. Survey shows House is 70% white, 14.5% black, and 12.2% Hispanic. My data just isn't as good as the first hand responses the Speaker has, and I show nearly 30% with an 'unclear' race designation. But, here is what I've got.pic.twitter.com/YBrO5WmXSW

Again, though, let's look at it by position. In nearly all positions, and especially those in DC, minorities are vastly underrepresented. Chiefs of Staff, Deputy Chiefs, LDs, Comms. Dirs., etc., all have less than 10% of the posts filled by either blacks or Hispanics.pic.twitter.com/fbaScdmjfr

Let's talk about dolla bills. The report has an average salary of $69,379, and $102,400 for committee staffers. My data (which has all staffer payments) shows a median of about $63,000, so a bit less. Let's look at annualized salaries by position just for funzies.pic.twitter.com/YLRB8cADHY

Tenure, you're up next. The report lists that the average tenure (years working for the House) is 5.5 years. Helpful to know the average, but here are my calcs for tenure by position. Spoiler: it varies a lot.pic.twitter.com/yYwe13wFZP

Finally, a cool new look at the educational attainments. Little has been done on this to date. I show similar results at the Speaker's report, but I add in a little spice of JD degrees as a category. Takeaways: the Hill is highly educated, especially cmtes, tons of lawyers.pic.twitter.com/eFqnMWSfHU

Both of these sources of data (Speaker's report and my
@LegiStorm provided data) have pros and cons, and neither should be taken as wholly representative of House staffers, especially on race. We need better data, always, but we are getting better.Show this thread -
Please let me know if you have any questions or want me to look at any other cross-sections of any of these goodies. But, it's beer o'clock and this is all you get for now.
