Some people's kids like to throw a ball. Mine has a d6.

  5. Yeah, that's totally not me, except when I'm working with kicky cows. I legit love difficult ones. Not murderous ones. Just tricky girls who need a calm, smart hand.

  6. As a kid, I always dreamed of being one of those badass warriors from fantasy novels who swing a sword and don't feel pain.

  7. Honestly, I don't often feel the kicks until the bruises form. Most of them are grazing hits from her sharp toes.

  8. You want to get kicked in your fleshy parts: Thighs, calves, arms. Not the face, hands, joints. Any movement during a kick should be getting important parts out of the way.

  9. While I can't stay outside of a cow's kick zone, I make sure my knee joints aren't directly presented to her. Her hooves graze the sides of my leg, not the joint itself. SUPER IMPORTANT.

  10. Also, keep your mouth shut, jaw loose. Don't suck in your lips, bite your lips, put your tongue anywhere near your teeth.

  11. Don't lock your knees! You want your knees to bend, want your body to be able to move with a kick.

  12. Now, you're going to feel the need to lock your body in place and tense up. Don't do that.

  13. First thing I do when working with a kicky cow is to lean into her side with my shoulder. It holds her in place, makes her feel safer, and allows me to feel her twitchy moves before she kicks.

  14. I once was given the advice to "stay out of her kick zone" when working with cows. It was a lanky tall dude who said it and I am a squat, broad chick. Out of a cow's kick zone is basically not touching a cow for me.

  16. She just doesn't like the process of having her teats prepped and cleaned, particularly the two rear ones.

  18. The nice thing about working with a heifer is that you expect the kicks. She's learning to be a cow!

  19. You let your guard down around cows you trust, then suddenly a pitchfork slams into the ground, scares her, and you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  20. When you're dealing with cows, you're going to get kicked. If I'm being honest, the worst kicks I've had were from good cows at bad times.
