The word “Orwellian” is overused in conversations about Free Speech, but this... ...this is truly Orwellian.pic.twitter.com/yfvNAitLEB

Let’s not dilute the issue here - the UK government stoked a culture (class) war by pretending that powerful people suffering a loss of platform as a consequence of their harmful actions; and discussion of Britain’s real, unsanitised history were somehow both acts of censorship.

They’re now using that lie as an excuse to apply *true* censorship to students and academia (targeting the two things that most threaten their future power - youth and facts).

This goes beyond gaslighting, because they’re not simply telling brazen lies in the hope that their mendacity might convince people they’re telling the truth - they’re providing their supporters with the same lie.

No one - on either side - believes this justification, but as long as one side is prepared to *pretend* they do, they force any dissent to argue about the lie instead of the truth.

So let’s cut through the crap and call this what it is - unashamed authoritarian fascism. And it’s not hyperbole to say so.

Curious that what some in UK gov consider “rewriting” is actually correcting the somewhat dubious original rewrite where Britain was a force for good in the world. Which is, of course, what all imperial forces are /s

The problem is that most people believe history is fixed and finite, ready-served on a plate. They believe that if you add anything to this plate, through previously unseen revelations, it is considered heresy and in danger of knocking the "good bits" off the plate.

Dowden doing this whole looking like a Poundland gameshow host every time he gives a press conference is the most cursed British vibe

On the contrary, Orwellian actions would have implemented a Ministry of Truth, but that's your department!

In no mood for fascist apologists today - go champion this gaslighting government in the block bin instead of my replies.
