I share that anger and I see the systemic racism tearing our community apart. For generations, black communities throughout our country have been held down, ignored, and ripped apart by police brutality and a system of injustice.

To white people specifically: it is time for us to step up our support. This is not our movement to co-opt for our own ends, but it is a movement where we need to amplify the voices that are being ignored.

We have to educate ourselves on the issues and we have to be fierce allies to those crying for justice and advocate for the reforms required to address these injustices. And we must demonstrate our support and commitment to this movement through our actions, not just our words.

I have never been prouder of the community that I call home than I have been over the last couple of months. This ongoing crisis has shown the best of who we are. People of all backgrounds have come together to provide food for those who need it,

child care for parents who are unable to work from home, and much needed medical supplies to our health care workers and the vulnerable. There is hope for change if we bring that same communal, empathetic spirit to demand racial justice in our community.

To the people that say, “Go back where you came from.” Have you, or anyone in your family, ever been kidnapped, taken to another country, been enslaved, raped, beaten or killed at will, had your children sold? And been punished generations later for existing?
