i'm looking at a book right now that says imperative prog style says *how* to do something; declarative says *what* to do
Ok so why isn't this just called encapsulation or abstraction

Using abstractions to encapsulate the details of an algorithm can produce an interface that enables a declarative style of programming.

declarative/imperative describes language, whereas encapsulation is more of a structural term.
