The in-rehearsal lingo's not going to go away; that's working/operational language for us. So that's okay.

The music follows a strong format/pattern that's existed for hundreds of years. There are specific terms/conventions around describing it...

...but just as all language evolves, we should evolve how we talk conversationally about classical music. It SHOULD be accessible!

Like with anything else, changing our lingo/phrasings doesn't mean dumbing it down. It means opening it up.

I imagine it's tough for professional musicians: they're always with like-minded friends/family. Tough to make themselves talk differently.

But I try to talk about this with my parents, my non-musician friends, and the effort it takes to make them understand is well worth it.

I've been playing violin for ages but most of my friends don't speak that language. It takes conscious effort to learn new ways of speaking.

And frankly, hearing conductors talk at pops shows/festivals makes me cringe a bit b/c I KNOW the audience doesn't get all they're saying.

There's not an easy answer. Orchs are trying so hard already. Maybe if they do focus groups (user research?!) w/ younger folks, laypeople...

Their programming/lineup is great. But the linguistic microinteractions, the language, would make them approachable and put people at ease.

Oh, this is cool! Helping to map out musical structure is really helpful - wonder how to adapt it for adults, though?
