This week I've been asking students to think about threats to resource security for different groups in a region of the Peruvian Andes, and potential adaptation/mitigation strategies. When the local impacts of climate change are all too clear news like this really hits hits home.

Looking forward to taking part in a panel discussion today for ECRs in the northeast Cold Regions Research group. I'll be talking about my experiences from fieldwork - the good, the bad, and the practical. It'll be great to meet more of the many icy researchers in the NE! ❄

Solidarity with the ~500000 workers across the UK who are striking today. The real terms pay cuts that both university staff and teachers have seen over the last decade is a disgrace. I love my job, but I deserve to be paid fairly and have a fair pension when I retire. #ucuRISING

If you've been wondering why university staff (see Lecturers below) are going on strike... ... this is just one of the reasons, but an important one. #ucuRISING @ucu

Many moons ago I wrote an essay for a uni biology module about snowball earth as a mass extinction. I got my lowest ever grade because it wasn't an event the lecturer thought of as a mass extinction. And that, ladies and jellybeans, is why I'm a glaciologist not a biologist!πŸ˜‚

I'm looking to hire two postdocs to work on glaciological instrumentation for studying glacier hydrology. The job ads should go live next week. If you would like to be notified when the ads go out, please DM me or email prior-jonesm@cardiff.ac.uk.

(As someone who's just had one of these days) sometimes it really is okay to spend time on low-hanging fruit during a busy period at work. Small tasks are still productive, and rest helps maintain long-term productivity. Those small tasks are often the ones that help others too!

Damn. The government has rejected recommendations to recognise #menopause as a protected characteristic and to pilot menopause leave, because it's worried about discriminating against... men! Women's healthcare in the UK ranks low and set to get lower...

My word. The women's #BenidormCX was SO exciting! There was me thinking it would be boring given how dry the course was, but it was fast and sketchy and a really close fight. Chapeau to all the riders for smashing it and showing how good women's cyclocross can be! ♀️πŸ’ͺ🚲

Happy #PenguinAwarenessDay! My research focuses more on Arctic and alpine areas than the polar south, but I've loved penguins since a young age. I remember my first visit to the penguin parade at Edinburgh Zoo and my stuffed toy Percy the Penguin. I even have a penguin tattoo! 🐧

It’s Penguin Awareness Day today so here’s a poem called β€˜Penguin Awareness’. #PenguinAwarenessDay

Penguin AwarenessΒ
Β Β
I've been aware of penguins since I was three.Β
I think one may have moved in with me.Β
Β
The signs are everywhere.Β
The smell of saltwater in the air.Β
There are moulted feathers on my chair.Β
Yesterday I found a fish upon the stair.Β
But when I turn around there's no one there,Β
for he moves in the shadows, like Tony Soprano.Β
I am forever stepping in guano.Β
Β
I don’t know why he's come to live with me. Β
There are better places for him to be.Β
But, when I’ve gone to bed, I can hear the treadΒ
of his soft heels across the kitchen floor,Β
and the opening of the freezer door.Β
Β
And I picture him there, Β
his head resting on a frozen shelf,Β
dreaming sadly of somewhere else,Β
thinking about the hand that life has dealt him,Β
and I wonder if his heart is melting.Β

That's eight years of data you complete pillock. It also includes some of the hottest periods on record, despite three years of La NiΓ±a, which you can't see without longer term context. Cherrypicking data to suit your climate denial agenda is so 2022. #getinthebin

13 million views. Even @ElonMusk commented. Twitter tried to censor it but just wound up exposing (again) the lying nature of climate alarmism. Added bonus: My explanation and warming prediction. junkscience.com/2023/01/milloy

This week I'll be 'peddling my woke agenda' by ensuring indigenous voices are heard in my lecture about the impact of cryospheric change on resource security. I guess I should be dragged to the stocks and publicly pelted with rotten vegetables. πŸ™„

I've recently re-started both yoga and running (which I hadn't done in months) and knitting (which I hadn't done in almost two years!). It's a busy month work-wise, but it feels really good to be doing hobbies again while still meeting deadlines. Balance is so important. ❀

One of the last things we did before moving from Plymouth to Durham was to spend a night on the moor. Dartmoor played such an important role in our life in the SW and somewhere I felt strongly connected to. I hate thinking that others won't be allowed to do this. #RightToRoam

β€œFighting is our only option.” Devastation, anger – and a determination to resist. Seven outdoor enthusiasts reflect on their connections to Dartmoor and react to today’s high court decision overturning the right to wild camp there. thegreatoutdoorsmag.com/news/fighting-

I am so angry at this decision. A horrible loss for all but the ruling elite. Being able to wild camp on Dartmoor was an example of how it should be across the rest of English wild spaces, but instead the public's access to nature is being diminished while pheasant shoots thrive.
Quote Tweet
Devastating verdict - the right to wild camp in England & Wales has been stolen from us. Access to nature & green space has *so many* benefits for our health, wellbeing & economy. The fight to defend #RightToRoam must go on @Right_2Roam @EveryonesStars theguardian.com/environment/20

Kiruna recently saw it's city centre moved 3km to accommodate mining activities, and the environment in the region plays an important role in Sami reindeer herding, so there will be some important conversations going on in the coming years. Interesting to see how this pans out!

Wow, this is BIG news. >1 million tonnes of rare earth metals have been discovered in northern Sweden. This will help to reduce reliance on China, and to transition to green energy, but what about the impact on the environment and indigenous people?

Where do the maps on navigation apps come from? Most members of the public probably don't realise they’re often based on crowdsourced data. Recent rescues in the Lakes have raised concerns about how apps - including OS Maps - use this info. MoreπŸ‘‡

So will kick scientists out of a conference for climate activism, they're not so quick to respond to the bullying and harassment that happens there. Unbelievable that lost her job after her activism at AGU, for speaking out about the very issues she studies.

Very sad to hear that Alejo Cochachin has died. Alejo was a leader in improving understanding of glaciers, lakes, and mountain ecoystems in the tropical Andes, and his passing leaves a huge void in the research community. My condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

One of my favourite memories of 2022... swimming in warm water in a quiet Devon cove with the best company. ❀ It was sad to leave the Devon chapter of my life behind, but the north east is already offering so much. All the very best to everyone for a happy, healthy 2023! πŸ₯‚

I'm an academic and not working during the holidays (despite January looking crazy busy). Still far too many people on Twitter making out like this is a controversial choice. Academia might be a job we love, but it is still a job. Today I'll be doing a jigsaw and drinking tea! β˜•

Another year around the sun for me. A quiet birthday this year (it usually is given the proximity to Christmas!) but enjoying being back in Scotland for a few days, getting into the hills, and seeing family. ❀ Have a very happy festive season everyone! πŸŽ„

Two more medical appointments in 2022 (breast MRI today as part of annual monitoring; wound care for a slow-healing surgical incision tomorrow). Fingers crossed for a few less in 2023, but I am starting to get used to hospital gown glamour! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘—

Durham isn't half bad... 😍 Soaking up the last of the wintry scenes and frozen ground before the >10 degree jump in temperature arrives on Monday. Bodes well for energy bills; bodes badly non-muddy dog walks! πŸ˜‚

Islay's been loving the snowy ground over the last few days, and I'm happy not to have to clean up mud after every dog walk for a change! She's so excited about the snow and ice that it's like flying a 13kg kite when she's on the lead! I've stayed upright so far though... πŸ˜‚β„

Started my Friday by submitting paper revisions (godspeed little ones!), so no matter how badly / unproductively the rest of the day goes at least there's that. And wine at 5pm. 😬🍷
